[Last update: 27.04.2010] [ QSKW A 2 ] "Hallelujah, now we will see America".Letters from emigrants of the district of Lübbecke and adjoining areas 1836-1889. Heinz-Ulrich Kammeier (Ed.) This title is also available as paperback. "Hallelujah, now we will see America" is the third volume on German emigrants edited by the historian and local historian Kammeier. Its topic are the dreams, thoughts, and experiences of 19th century people emigrating into an unknown future from need or thirst for adventure. Numerous of them found what they searched for, a life in freedom and prosperity. They reported those back home their efforts to purchase land, to buy a farm, to establish shops and firms. They equally had to fight the rigours of nature, epidemics, tricky profit-seekers, and the terrors of the American Civil War [1861-1865]. Their political judgements now and then proved amazingly precise and historically correct. Frequently it can be observed from their military service and the giving up of their native language, how the new citizens settled in their refuge. Examples of emigrants failing in their efforts can only rarely be found in the sources. The editor attributes this to the fact that mainly the successful ones were in a position and willing to keep up the contact with relatives in the old home. The reader will encounter people back home considering emigration, too, who were not always encouraged by their relatives, but also received warning hints. The editor completes the letters with comments, assessments, and a short sketch of the history of each family on which the letters report.
