From 1819 to 1879, the chroniclers of the parish of Wehdem recorded everything that moved and affected their contemporaries. Heinrich Strangmeier [1899-1986], to whom this volume is dedicated, completely copied this chronicle until 1951. It notes, e. g. the finances of the villages and their expenditures for public buildings. Reports on theft, burglary, forgery, and capital crimes attest, that the times were not always quiet. Births, deaths, and marriages are documented and allow many conclusions, e. g. that also infanticide and abortions formed part of everyday life. A case of attempted suicide is reported as a "crime". Many accidents, in which particularly children were killed, are recorded. There are also entries on deaths due to total inebriation and divorces. As late as 1847, there was a big famine in the parish of Wehdem which required state assistance in the form of provisions. Another scourge was epidemics such as smallpox, which often extinguished whole families. Fires could deprive people of their livelihood within shortest time. Frequently, there are entries on the weather, which had far-reaching consequences for agriculture and crop yields. By an analysis of weather and crop yields, the editor is able to prove a deterioration of the climate between 1838 and 1858, which caused a wave of emigration to America and which mainly affected poor farmers with fields in unfavourable locations. Political changes can be recognized, too, because changes of government were accompanied by new orders and laws.
