The district of Lübbecke and the First World War.

On 11th November 1998, the 80th anniversary of the end of the First World War was celebrated. This was the cause for the present volume based on a series of lectures which the author read at an adult education centre in the course of 1997. Although the former district of Lübbecke was no combat zone, the war affected in one way or another almost every single inhabitant. On the basis of rich source material the course and the consequences of the war are analysed as an example also for other rural areas of the Reich. In the focus of interest are neither the general political, military or technical history nor the experience of the front, but aspects of administration and mobilization, government control and supplies, everyday life on the front as documented in pictures and texts, agriculture and taxes, prisoners and prison camps, schools and war assistants, the Church and pastoral care as well as the development of public opinion from 1914 to 1918. The 2,300 inhabitants of the district of Lübbecke, who were killed in action, got missing or otherwise died from the war, are listed individually according to parishes. The book is enriched by numerous impressive photographs and reproductions of old documents as well as personal war memories of many soldiers that are illustrated in a representative manner by means of diary entries and letter excerpts. The volume concludes with a substantial bibliography [general and local literature] and an appendix of source material [archives, private individuals, firms, newspapers, journals].
