The Romanization of the Scordisci.
Milica Tapavički-Ilić
During the last 3 centuries B.C. the Scordisci represented the Latène Culture of the Serbian Danube area and the Morava valley. They were referred to in the written sources and formed a mixed population together with indigenous peoples [Illyrians, Thracians, Dacians]. From around the birth of Christ onwards, imports are attested. The Scordisci had open and fortified settlements with plain or complex pit houses, hearths, and waste pits, sometimes also rectangular buildings. Strategically important oppida such as Zemum / Taurunum or Slankamen / Acumincum became integrated into the Roman Danube limes. Through the construction of Roman roads many settlements lost their importance, while others gained such as Sremska Mitrovica / Sirmium, Beograd / Belgrade / Singidunum or Kostolac / Viminacium. During the 3rd century many settlements developed into villae rusticae. Important characteristics of Romanization were changes of pottery, the occurrence of oil lamps, Roman fibulae, bronze vessels, republican coins, grave urns, reliefs, and Latin inscriptions as well as the disappearance of weapons in graves. Archaeobotanical and archaeozoological studies are still in their infancy.
