Jastorf and Latène.

Cultural exchange and its impact on socio-political developments in the pre-Roman Iron Age.

Jochen Brandt

The subjects of research are the connection between the differentiation of the Jastorf Culture and the Latènization of its material culture on the basis of the anthropological models of prestige-goods economy and core-periphery. The Latènization occurred in 4 phases from the east and only at the end from the west [1. weak influence in the south, 2. costume elements in the total area, 3. reduced influence, 4. many latènoid objects, hitherto absent from graves]. Only the material culture was touched, technical innovations were absent, the function of objects was maintained. The cultural type is determined as a segmental society which - due to the autonomy of its economic, social and political units - leads to diffuse archaeological evidence and is equated with chiefdoms. The author observes population shifts for ecological reasons, increasing exploitation of resources, population concentration [villages, central cemeteries], rising demand for organisation and leadership, and militarization. Other factors are ideals of generosity with ceremonial, egalitarian-redistributive or reciprocal exchange and a possible magical-ritual meaning of foreign cultural elements.
